The fourth T20I match between India and South Africa was abandoned without a single ball being bowled due to excessive fog in Lucknow. The match was scheduled to take place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, but poor visibility made it unsafe for play.
Fog Delays Toss and Match Start
The toss for the match was originally planned for 6:30 PM local time, but thick fog covered the stadium area well before that. Match officials and umpires carried out multiple inspections at intervals of around 30 minutes, hoping that the conditions would improve.
Unfortunately, the fog did not clear, and visibility remained extremely poor throughout the evening. As a precautionary step, the grounds staff covered the pitch with hessian sheets around 8:00 PM, indicating a long delay.
At 9:25 PM local time, officials officially called off the match without a toss, citing “excessive fog” as the reason.
Poor Air Quality Adds to the Problem
Apart from fog, poor air quality further worsened the situation. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lucknow crossed 400, which falls under the ‘severe’ category and poses serious health risks.
Both teams spent most of their time inside the dressing rooms. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya was even seen wearing a mask while stepping out onto the field, highlighting the seriousness of the conditions.
Fans Wait Patiently in the Stadium
Despite the challenging weather and air quality, the stadium remained nearly half-full until the official announcement of abandonment. Fans had gathered with excitement, as this was India’s first international match in Lucknow since the 2023 World Cup.
Many supporters waited patiently, hoping for at least a shortened game, but safety concerns took priority.
Series Situation After Abandonment
With the match abandoned, India continue to lead the five-match T20I series 2-1. The final and fifth T20I will be played in Ahmedabad on Friday, December 19.
South Africa now have a chance to level the series, while India will aim to secure a series victory at home.
What’s Next?
All eyes will now be on Ahmedabad, where weather conditions are expected to be much clearer. Fans are hopeful for an exciting series decider after the disappointment in Lucknow.
